How to Get Grounded and Stay Productive When Motivation Feels Low

We all have days when motivation feels out of reach. You know there are tasks waiting for you, goals you want to move forward, and responsibilities that still need your attention—but your energy just is not there.
Yesterday was one of those days for me. I could feel that I had work to do and tasks waiting for my attention, but mentally, I was not fully there. Instead of forcing myself to sit at my desk and push through, I listened to what I needed in that moment and chose to step outside, reset my energy, and clear my mind.
I spent time in nature, enjoyed good company, and caught up on life in a way I did not realize I needed. Some of the conversation was simple small talk, and some of it turned into what I like to call entrepreneur talk—the kind of conversation that sparks ideas, perspective, and motivation. By the time I came home, I felt clearer, more grounded, and ready to finish the work I had planned to complete.
That experience reminded me that I do not always need to push harder to be productive. Sometimes, what I really need is to pause, reconnect with myself, and give my mind the space it has been asking for.
Why taking a break can improve focus and productivity
For me, this shows up often when I am balancing work, business ideas, personal goals, and everyday responsibilities. When you work a nine-to-five, run a business, or offer a product or service—whether online or in person—it can be easy to stay locked into work mode, especially during the summer. But taking intentional breaks, getting outside, and grounding yourself can support your productivity while still helping you make room for the things you need to accomplish.
I have also noticed that I have been more on track this week with completing tasks, and part of that has come from creating a new system for myself. I will share more about that in a separate blog post because it has been helping me stay organized in a way that feels realistic. But for now, I want to focus on this question: what do you do when you know something needs to get done, but you also feel like you need to take a step back first?
Simple ways to reset your mindset when you feel unmotivated
If you are wondering how to stay motivated, get grounded, or improve your focus when your energy feels low, here are a few simple habits that can help you reset:
- Get outside and walk in the grass.
- Do a workout outdoors.
- Catch up with an old friend over coffee or a walk.
- Spend time around good energy that helps you reset your mind.
For me, sometimes getting back on track does not require a complete life overhaul. It may only take a second brain, the right conversation, the right environment, or a simple change of scenery to help me shift my energy and see things more clearly.
So the next time motivation feels low, I hope you give yourself permission to choose one small action that helps you reset. Step outside, breathe, move your body, call a friend, or simply take a quiet moment to reconnect with yourself. Do not wait until you feel perfectly motivated to begin again—create the space, shift your energy, and take the next step forward.
